Saturday 3 rd March 2007 : Makha Bucha Day,

an important day in Buddhism

The word Makha Bucha can be translated as a Bucha (respect) made on the day when the moon moves past a luminous star named Makha. It’s called as the auspicious time when the moon passing Makha, falling on the day of the full moon in the third lunar month.

History of “Makha Bucha Day”

9 months after the Buddha attained enlightenment, it was the day of the full moon in the third lunar month. His disciples had gathered at the Buddha’s place on that day. It was amazing that the assembly was marked by 4 events, calling Jaturongkhasannibat , which were;

1. That day was the day of the full moon in the third lunar month.

2. 1 , 250 monks came for an assembly by coincidence.

3. All these monks were Arahants

4. All these monks had been admitted to the monk hood by the Buddha.

On that day, the Buddha had taught the fundamental teaching (Owat Patimok) to the assembly of these monks. It could be deemed as a declaration of Dhamma principles and practices of Buddhism, which can be summarized as follows.

  • To refrain from all kinds of wickedness . That is to refrain from committing any sins, physically, verbally, and mentally.
  • To lead a life of virtue . That is to do all kinds of goodness, physically, verbally, and mentally.
  • To purify one’s mind by observing the precepts, meditation, in order to reach enlightenment, the real purity.

It’s a tradition for the Buddhists to make merit, offer foods for monks, observe precepts, listen to sermon. The main thing is to practice in real life the fundamental teaching (Owat Patimok) taught by the Buddha, to be truly called a perfect Buddhist.
