Joining the merit during the Buddhist Lent 2005

The Buddhist Lent for this year will be between 22 July to 18 October . It’s rainy season during which monks must stay at one temple throughout the season (around 3 months). For Wat Pa Luangta Maha Bua Forest Monastery ( Tiger Temple ) , there are 5 monks and 2 little novices staying at the temple during the Buddhist Lent this year.

Normally around 6 a.m. monks and novices will walk on the alms’ round (Pindapata) in the village . If it’s not during the Buddhist Lent, we can offer food to monks at the pavilion (Sala), but must arrive before 8 a.m. , because the monks here take only one meal at 8 a.m.

But during the Buddhist Lent , the Forest Monks usually keep one or many of the stringent rules/practices from their normal precepts ie to have one meal only from walking on his alms’ round. Therefore the presenting food to the Forest Monks during the Buddhist Lent must only be in the kind of offering food in a monk’s bowl. Phra Acharn Chan (the abbot) and monks and novices will kindly walk on their alms’rounds in the front of the monastery after coming back from their rounds in the village. Monks will start their rounds in the front of the monastery at 8 a.m . so that those who stay far away can come in time. The food offered should be separately packed into each set for each monk and novice.

In the evening at the pavilion (Sala), there will be sitting meditation starting at 7 p.m. , listening to the tape-recorded sermon given by Venerable Luangta (in Thai). Phra Acharn Chan has kindly given sermon to monks and laymen (if any) every night. Furthermore, he also kindly gives sermon in English if there is any foreigner who does not understand Thai. It’s a great occasion for the Buddhist to keep making merit by offering, observing the precepts, and practicing meditation for the whole 3-month period of the Buddhist Lent.
